Graphical Abstract

Show data for Figure 1

Graphical abstract, a bespoke graphic design that conveys the key findings of research.

In this example, the graphical abstract is a two-column illustration separated by a thin grey line. The illustration is topped with the research title, "Larval pathogen with biocontrol potential deters oviposition in Aedes aegypti". Each column shows:

First column: an illustrated triangular relationship diagram where the top corner has an impact on the bottom two corners.

  • The top corner shows an uninfected adult Aedes aegypti.
  • The bottom left corner shows uninfected larvae. A down arrow below it points to several eggs. Next to the eggs is a blue up arrow.
  • The bottom right corner shows larvae infected with E. aedies. A downwards arrow below it points to only few eggs. Next to the eggs is a red down arrow.

Second column: the same illustrated triangular relationship diagram is included, with the single difference of the top corner, which now shows an adult Aedes aegypti infected with Edhazardia aedis.

For both columns, the blue up arrow suggests that there is more egg production from uninfected larvae, compared to the red down arrow which suggests that there is less egg production from infected larvae.

A summary of the research is below the overall illustration, stating: "Fewer eggs in cups with infected larvae, possibly due to the production of chemical cues. Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus were not affected by infection with Vavraia culicis and CuniNPV, respectively".
